Contentment #3 — Proportional Contentment

There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. So to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Discontent will destroy the Church in any of its varied forms. For discontent disables the gifts God has designed to build the Church. Gifts only operate as we trust the guidance of God, and as we seek to establish the faith of those who receive God’s gifts through us. Therefore any lack of assurance that God has given us the correct gift for just this moment keeps us from using it, especially when we compare what he’s given us to what he gave someone else. The way to destroy discontent is to consider the nature of our gifts, rather than the gifts themselves; and to consider his purpose in giving them, rather than our prestige for having them. God disburses his gifts for the “common good,” which tells us there is a higher good than our self-esteem. The growth of the Body of Christ is more important than our sense of personal worth. Also, since our gifts come from God and are exactly proportioned for the work he wants done, all of them are capable of fully satisfying our hearts. The blessings with which we bless are blessed indeed.

O Gifting God, fill my heart with joy as I participate in extending your goodness to the world through the Body of Christ. Amen.
