Christian Freedom #4 — Freedom From Fear

What then shall we say to these truths of God’s sovereign work? We say, if God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how will he not also with him freely give us all things? Romans 8:31-32

Freedom from fear rests in the grace of God. It rests on knowing how fully and effectively and joyously he has worked for us in the past, especially through Jesus. It rests on knowing, by implication, that such grace will continue to be with us, no matter what kind of obstacles to our joy we encounter. The God who can satisfy his desire to do good to ungodly people, while righteously upholding the glory of his goodness, can be trusted to overcome every obstacle that might arise to impede the flow of his blessing. Furthermore, God’s grace is freeing because he is free. He is free in that the joy he experiences as he beholds his perfection in the Son is all that compels him to do everything necessary to bring his people into this same experience. Therefore we are released from fearing anything that appears to get in the way of his accomplishing this purpose. If the God of grace is for us, no one can effectively be against us.

Gracious God, keep me from judging you by feeble sense. I want to trust you for your grace. I know that behind your frowning providence, you hide a smiling face. Amen.
