Humility #6—Renewing Humility

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Physical health begins with humility. So does spiritual health. Before a doctor will work with us toward recovery, we must humble ourselves enough to admit our need and seek an audience with a physician who can address our problem. Our humility must be so deep that we are willing to accept the lifestyle changes he prescribes. Before God will work toward our revival, we must do the same. The rewards of restored health are so obvious, that few of us think twice about humbling themselves in this way. The benefits of spiritual health are even more obvious and more enticing, but few of us, it seems, take the steps necessary to receive them. It’s not enough to turn from our wicked ways or to seek God’s face or, even, to pray. For all of these may be done arrogantly or deceptively—as Israel did during Josiah’s reformation. A humble self-assessment of inability and a self-deprecating declaration of impoverishment are necessary for genuine repentance and renewal. Such humility honors our infinitely wise and powerful creator. When we demonstrate this righteous regard for God’s holy name, he graciously and mercifully responds.

Sabbath Lord, I admit my complete and utter dependence on you, glad for your uniqueness, the only deity who works for those who wait for you. With humble patience I walk in your way.
